Prague: the city of spires

Prague is a stunningly beautiful city with more churches than you can throw a stick at. The wonderful thing about this is that the churches are all used on a daily basis to host concerts, classical music and opera. The city itself is well laid out with excellent public transport and wonderful riverside activities and parks. The buildings are old but beautifully maintained and are painted in pastels that really enhance the whole place. Everywhere you look you see amazing buildings and, yes, spires!

The wide river winding alongside the city seems to be enjoyed by locals as well as tourists and even had a floating bar!! There is a medieval skyline looking down over the city and river which adds to its’ charm. The old town square has the usual plethora of statues, fountains, a cathedral, gorgeous buildings and a clock tower. This is the worlds oldest working clock tower (Astronomical clock tower, 1410) and has the original 12 wooded apostles appearing every hour, it also has a curse as well as a skeleton who will start nodding to show the Czech nation will suffer if the clock stops working!!

The Charles Bridge is wonderful, lined with 16 amazing statues and gothic towers on each end, it began construction in 1357!! It is the oldest preserved bridge in Europe – the Czech’s really look after their historical sites! There were so many sites we visited, churches we entered, gothic cathedrals, museums, opera houses and wide boulevards – you can see why we just loved our time in Prague.

Please enjoy our pictures – a city well worth visiting.

The Vltava river.
The churches were beautiful with lots of gold and silver gilt.

Discalced Carmelite Church of Our Lady of Victories houses the 16th Century wax coated wooden statue of baby Jesus. The church had a museum of cloaks that have been created and sent to the church from around the globe. The baby Jesus doll gets dressed up in these different cloaks to celebrate different feasts, He has performed many miracles for Prague in the past and is very much revered and venerated!

The astronomical clock was installed in 1410. The twelve Apostles appear when the clock strikes on the hour. This must have seemed like a miracle in 1410! (or magic!)
