Another day in the mountains…

The small town of Sheki in the Caucasus mountains is about 1700m above sea level and the place is beautiful no matter what the the weather is doing.

The weather changes quickly
as does the temperature, 5 degreess today!

Amazing sunsets…
Lunch from a hole in the wall!
Ancient bath house – left open to the elements and neglected.
Daily life … rubbish collection.
Don’t blow your trumpet near a Mosque!
The Khan’s Winter Palace went undiscovered for centuries whilst locals squatted in it, the richly decorated walls hidden under years of dirt. The painted walls are exquisite.
Intricate artwork and glass from Venice.
The play of coloured light inside the building gives it a special, mysterious air. These beautiful, intricate panels are usually made from the wood of plane trees assembled like a giant puzzle of thousands of pieces. Each wooden frame is cut and pieced together without nails or screws and then the glass is cut to fit into this latticework frame, a painstaking process called Shebeke, still practiced today in this region.

Small stores sell local produce, either pots or sweets or silk. Each shop specialises in a specific item.
Lilacs grown wild. The cemetery is on the hillside near our guest house. People visit their passed loved ones all the time but especially on Fridays.
Dramatic night sky
